Canada U.S Trade War Begins
I previously compared Canada’s economy to the U.S. as a mouse compared to an elephant but the U.S. is only 10 times bigger, so perhaps a monkey is a better fit for Canada especially with the leader.
The bad orange man is riding the big elephant on a steady course while the corrupt little red man is riding his monkey around in circles like crazy, hooting and a squealing once in a while nipping at the elephants legs. It is only a matter of when the monkey collapses with exhaustion or gets stepped on.
President Trump said the tariffs have been imposed because the two countries have not dealt adequately with the issue of fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid responsible for thousands of deaths in the United States and Canada.
Trump was asked by reporters on March 3 whether there’s anything the countries could do to avoid the tariffs this time and he responded that there was “no room left for Mexico or for Canada.”
Of course with just one day to go there is no room left but this is Trudeau's BS spin on it, saying this comment by Trump indicates the tariffs are not about really about stopping fentanyl.
“I think in what President Trump said yesterday, that there is nothing Canada or Mexico can do to avoid these tariffs, underlines very clearly what I think a lot of us have suspected for a long time, that these tariffs are not specifically about fentanyl,” Trudeau said at a press conference in Ottawa on March 4.
Trudeau suggested that Trump is instead using tariffs to provoke a “total collapse of the Canadian economy, because that'll make it easier to annex us.”
This is exactly what I predicted would happen. Canada has taken very little action at the borders but a lot of talk and announcements. Vancouver is the fentynal port of North America and it is still wide open. Absolutely nothing has been done. They could have at least brought in border police right away to show some action but there is only talk.. Here is a link to a local news paper article about the talk.
Transport Canada launched a 60-day public consultation on Jan. 31, about expanding the number of workers who would have to obtain a transportation security clearance.
Given the huge problem Canada has, probably everyone should have security clearance, it is not only drug smuggling but guns and auto theft. Canada is the car theft capital of the world, probably because it is so easy to smuggle them out of the country.
Local Delta B.C. Mayor George Harvie has for years been pushing for increased security for the port and he said. “We need to be all working together to stop the amount of fentanyl coming in and going out from Canada . . . it’s got to start with the federal government. That’s where it all starts. If we can go from less than one percent of containers being inspected to close to 100 percent, that’s an improvement. That’s what we’re looking for. That will create a barrier . . . for the open ports that we have now,”
And it is not just drug trafficking but Canada has beceme money laundry central for it. Last September, the Biden Justice Department hit the Toronto-Dominion Bank with a $3-billion fine for facilitating $670 million in money laundering for groups tied to transnational drug trafficking. And more in an excellent article in the Financial Post from a professor of economics at University of Guelph. I am not the only one to see this.
And also "I think politicians are being totally dishonest with Canadians and totally misleading” David Dodge, former Bank of Canada governor.
It is very sad for Canadians that the Trudeau/Carney Liberals are pushing this narrative just so they can further their agendas. It is total nonsense that the U.S. wants Canada but very obvious they want border security. These socialist only want to detract Canadians from the problems they have created and spin a big story of a big threat they can only deal with. Rally Canadians around the flag and rally them to vote liberal in the coming election and all the problems Canada has can be blamed on the big bad crazy Orange Man.
Sadder, is many Canadians are falling for this BS narrative driven by the propaganda in Government controlled media and all they need to do is a little of their own looking. Canadians are going to pay very dearly for following this socialist government, worse than any time in history. Canada needs to fix it's own problems but that surely won't happen under current pathetic leadership.
Whatever one might think of Donald Trump the man, people need to set aside their emotions to at least recognize that Trump the president is dead serious in his foreign policy goals, especially as it concerns the security of the regions ringing his country.
The Trump administration appears serious about bolstering the defense of North America—ranging from Panama to the Arctic Ocean. A picture paints a thousand words and it is easy to see Russia's dominance, the tiny Canada presence and the importance of Greenland. It is not Trump cazy talk to buy Greenland as the U.S. made an offer after WWII and Trump floated the idea in his 1st term.
The Trump Administration is right to be concerned about the growing Northern Threat with only lame duck Canada giving some land barrier. The Russian Federation has more than 30 icebreakers, many of them nuclear-powered, and its navy’s Northern Fleet numbers over 30 surface vessels and submarines, including about two-thirds of Russia’s nuclear-powered warships.
Canada only has two heavy ice breakers that could navigate the Artic, one over 60 years old the Louis S St-Laurent and the Terry Fox just over 40 years. Really no comparison
Back to Canada's horrible economic scenario.
The country has already in a recession for a while and on top of this, there is certain to be huge job losses due to tariffs. Canadians are leaving the country in droves. In 2024, Ontario saw a record number of people leave the country from the province, the most since 2011. Temporary worker numbers are plunging at record rates, not because the government is not allowing as many in, because the ones here are leaving because there are no jobs. Now to make the perfect storm the U.S. is in recession and when they go into one, Canada gets a worse one, but we already have a head start.
U.S Recession
I was skeptical in 2024 especially the last half that the U.S. Economy was being propped up falsely for the election. Now we know for sure. However Trump's cuts to immigration and government are also a big factor.
I follow The Atlanta Fed’s GDPNow forecasting model and for first-quarter GDP growth is collapsing, now projecting a recessionary -2.8%.
Just last week, the model projected a 2.3% annual growth rate for the first quarter of 2025. However, after Friday’s economic data, that estimate plummeted to a recessionary -1.5%. Then, on Monday, additional data sent the forecast tumbling even further to a staggering -2.8%. I am not getting into details today, but look out Friday as government job cuts will start to hit the job numbers.
The U.S. will get through the recession, unless some outside event happens, which is possible but Canada will not. We all know what happened to the Andrea Gail in the “Perfect Storm”. If Canadians think the last couple years were bad, you have seen nothing yet. We will all know people and families that lose their homes, cars repossession and more. So sad Canadian leadership is sending the sheep over the cliff and they don't know it yet.
From the PDAC "The industry that has fueled most of the great Canadian minerals discoveries over the past 50 years is but a skeleton of itself," said mining financier Pierre Lassonde, who co-founded Franco-Nevada Corp. "We should be extremely concerned." ...
A skeleton is what you find in the ground after it is dead a number of years. I have been talking about the skeleton for 2 years. This year we put some flesh back on
Bitcoin
I was only able to put the last two Bitcoin trades out on my Signal group
We went short with SBIT at $11.80 Monday with the Trump crypto reserve announcement and
next day sold at $13.55 for a very nice quick gain.
